Se elevan sobre el aire pareciendo volar a la velocidad de la luz, haciendo que el tiempo se convierta en pasado y el futuro se convierta en una meta presente. De ojos grandes y expresivos, largas extremidades, Cuerpo musculoso, fuerza interminable y temperamento ardiente… es el purasangre inglés…es el rey de las carreras.

El pura sangre inglés es una raza que se originó en el siglo XVIII en Inglaterra cuando unieron yeguas inglesas con sementales de razas tales como el arabe, el Berberisco y el Akhal Tekke.

The English Thoroughbred is a breed that originated in 18th century England when English mares were paired with stallions from breeds such as the Arabian, the Barbary, and the Akhal Tekke.

Estos caballos son los únicos animales de los que se guarda un historial individualizado desde hace más de dos siglos. Cada uno es único y cuenta con sus éxitos o fracasos anotados para la posteridad.

These horses are the only animals for which an individual history has been kept for more than two centuries. Each one is unique and has its successes or failures recorded for posterity.

En el siglo II después de Cristo, los romanos ya se dedicaban a hacer carreras con sus caballos celebrando estas competiciones en la zona de Wheaterby ( cerca de la actual York). Las carreras de caballos y con ello el pura sangre provienen de un buen mestizaje, y es que a la unión de la pureza de la raza gracias a los orientales, se unió la resistencia y la competición de los potros grecorromanos sumando finalmente el registro y stud book de los ingleses, donde se registran los purasangres y las normas del Jockey Club.

El mundo de los purasangres no sólo fascina en los hipódromos, si no que también nos han fascinado dentro de la gran pantalla donde historias como la de caballos como Seabiscuit o Secretariat nos han robado el corazón.

Entre las grandes carreras podemos hablar de la del “Arco del triunfo” que se celebra en París el primer domingo del mes de octubre. El “Derbi de Epsom” ( Londres) en ella sólo tienen entrada caballos de tres años. La famosa “King George and Queen Elizabeth” que se corre en Ascot, famosa por sus desfiles de espectaculares sombreros. Otras carreras conocidas con la Melbourne Cup, Japan Cup, el St Leger, el Derby de Kentucky o la Breeder’s Cup (USA) entre otras.

En España podemos disfrutar de las carreras de Sanlùcar de Barrameda, famoso por sus infinitas playas, el Hipódromo de la Zarzuela, el hipódromo de San Sebastián o el hipódromo de Torre del RAM entre otros.
