Old Billy será recordado a lo largo de la historia como el caballo más longevo, viviendo hasta los 62 años de edad.

Old Billy fue un caballo de raza shire nacido en 1760 en Lancashire ( Inglaterra), destinado a ser un caballo de carga para la industria textil. Allí trabajo durante mucho tiempo ayudando a pujar carros, tirando barcas a lo largo del río y sacando mercancías de los barcos para la compañía Mersey and Irwell Navigation en Warrington.

Old Billy murió el 27 de diciembre de 1822 muy cerca de la ciudad de Manchester. Al ser un animal tan especial por su longevidad sus restos se dividieron, el cráneo está en el museo de Manchester pero su cabellera y piel reposan en la Galería de Arte Cecil Higgings y el Museo Bedford. Como curiosidad, el cráneo no llegó al Museo de Manchester hasta 1824, dos años después de su muerte, un regalo de su antiguo trabajador.
