El polo tiene su origen en la antigua Persia. El término en sí significa “pelota”. Al principio en este juego todos los jugadores intervenían a la vez, con cualquier número de participantes provistos de palos curvados con los que arrebatarse la pelota. Cuando los ingleses se establecieron en la India, consiguieron caballos mongoles, pequeños pero robustos y los fueron adiestrando para poder jugar al Polo. Poco a poco se creó un reglamento detallado para este deporte. Argentina es el país donde es más popular este deporte.

Las reglas del polo son muy semejantes a las del hockey sobre hierba. Cuatro jugadores en cada bando y un árbitro. La pelota se coloca en el centro del campo y seguidamente los miembros de cada equipo intentan, golpear la pelota cada uno en dirección de otro compañero, hacerla avanzar a través del territorio contrario e introducirla entre los dos postes de la meta. El partido se juega en 5,6 ó 7 tiempos llamados chukkers de siete minutos cada uno donde los jugadores también pueden cambiar de caballo si lo necesitan en pausas de tres minutos.
The rules of polo are very similar to those of field hockey. Four players on each side and one referee. The ball is placed in the center of the field and then the members of each team try to hit the ball in the direction of another teammate, make it advance through the opposing territory and introduce it between the two goal posts.

Los criadores de estos animales han ido haciendo una labor delicada perfeccionando estos caballos y permitiendo que su raza sea cada vez más demandada.
