El caballo lusitano ó caballo portugués es de los más antiguos de la península Ibérica. Es fuerte y elegante, destacan en él sus capas en tonos cálidos. De cabeza proporcionada y grande. Cuello ancho y extremidades largas envolviendo su cuerpo atlético. Un caballo que no pasa inadvertido, rápido y de mucho equilibrio. Es el caballo que más destaca en la tauromaquia por su calma, su impulsión y su buen hacer esquivando los obstáculos que se le ponen por el camino. Valiente y seguro, así es el caballo lusitano.

Los caballos lusitanos fueron usados durante la guerra, además de ser usados en agricultura y caza. De antepasados ibéricos como el caballo Sorraia y el árabe. Sus pueblos fueron moldeando su doma y su raza con cruces, pero fue cuando Juan V de Portugal, creó una caballería de caballos portugueses por lo que comenzó su nueva andadura. Así se consiguieron unos caballos de gran calidad y importando yeguas y sementales se creó la denominada raza “Alter Real”.

Actualmente hay criadores de caballos lusitanos en Portugal, aumentando su cría en países como Francia, México y Brazil; aunque en Europa cada vez son más países los que se dedican a criar esta raza. Un caballo óptimo también para la doma clásica y que muchos jinetes españoles usan en esta disciplina.
